synaLinQ leaf (132x119px) Background

The ambitious construction of the new 150-bed Butaro Hospital under the joint leadership of PIH/MB and the Rwandan Ministry of Health aimed to bring a well-planned and innovative hospital concept to serve the people of Burera district in Rwanda, a remote region that has long been denied any access to health care of any appropriate quality.

Special attention has been paid to infection control, comprehensive service delivery, training and the sustainability of modern equipment and technology. The new hospital provides maternity, internal medicine, surgery and paediatrics as inpatient services, supported by an emergency department, two operating theatres, a special care baby unit, intensive care, outpatient ophthalmology, gynaecology and ear, nose and throat, and comprehensive laboratory services.

Construction began in December 2008, and the hospital opened its doors on 24 January 2011.
